Chattanooga

This is the spot my friends and I have dubbed "Chattanooga",  just north of Silverton Colorado. Obviously a very popular spot. Click here for a close up of the Chattanooga

Location: 5-6 miles North of Silverton Colorado on highway 550, south side of Red Mountain Pass before the big switchback (Chattanooga). I have seen it labeled "Browns Gulch" on some maps, including the google map link below.

Google maps link : Chattanooga Map

Nearest Ski Area: Silverton, Purgatory, Telluride

Access: 5-6 miles north of Silverton on highway 550 towards the summit of Red Mountain pass and Ouray.

Difficulty of hike/tour: Moderate, one stream crossing over snowbridge,  then a very steep ski or snowshoe up through the trees can take up to 3 hours if cutting the first track.

Trip Notes: There is usually a good pull-off from the highway plowed right at the base of this shot, but there are several in the area that one could use. Cross the basin, choose your creek crossing spot well, there is nothing worse than wet boots! The skin track was always up the right side of the picture, through the thick trees. The extra effort of making it to the top of the face is worth it for the extra turns, a lot of people enter lower in the face. Be aware of the current avalanche potential, I have seen this whole face go. Check current snow conditions frequently as this face does get a lot of sun and I  have seen the snow condition go from good to bad very quickly. Overall this is a great shot to get a few great turns when the snow pack is right. Great for doing multiple laps, once the track is layed its a pretty fast trip up for a second lap.

Always check the avalanche danger before you go out and always assess the danger when you arrive at the spot you would like to ride. Go to the links page to get more avalanche information.

With so much Backcountry around us to enjoy here in Southwest Colorado I thought surely there is a resource for backcountry travelers out there with trip ideas, established routes, stashes, reviews on local shops, Gear, Cat-Skiing, Huts, Yurts, Lodges, & Ski Areas. After searching for a while I realized there wasn't really one out there so....

.... here we go. Don't forget to send any pictures, trip info, or ideas to us and we'll get them  posted!

If you haven't skied with Silverton Powdercats yet, you have to go it is unreal!
